Injuries

Bull riding shows to be one of the most dangerous sports in the world, due to the fact they are trying to ride 1500 pound, angry animals. Rodeos are popular sporting events in the southern and western United States, and bull riders sustain 37% of all rodeo-related injuries, which is more than people in any other rodeo event. During 1994-1995 in Louisiana, five cases of central nervous system trauma associated with riding bulls in rodeo events were identified through the Louisiana Central Nervous System Injury Registry, a statewide, population-based surveillance system addressing brain and spinal cord injury incidence, etiology, and outcome. In a study done of injuries per event bull riding was the number one with a percent of 49.77%. Coming in at second was bareback riding with 22.80% which can also be very dangerous. These statistics go to show that although bull riding is dangerous, there's a small chance of dying, just injuries.

Silvano Alves

Silvano Alves is a 23 year old bull rider that is ranked 1st in the league. He is originally from Brazil and grew up bull riding. He eventually became a professional rider and was listed in the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough division. Since he started the journey he has won over 8 tournaments as well as the World Championships.

Alves became the first rider in PBR history to win the Built Ford Tough Series World Championship the year after earning the Rookie of the Year title on Sunday. Alves earned $1 million for winning the World Championship, which brings his season earnings to $1,456,964. Throughout the tournament he rode Bushwaker which I have talked about in earlier posts. He is one of the toughest bulls out there and he stayed to earn his own title as Bull of the Year. He was the first Brazilian in six years to win the title.

He is being looked up to by many younger bull riders and as well as people his age. He shows everyone that anything you want to do is possible. I think that Silvano is a very important person because coming from a different country it is often hard to start up a career and succeed and he surely did that. He managed to fight through to the top and overcome all the people that said he would never make it. He made it to the top and plans to stay there and this is someone that I look up to.

I am going to talk about the different bulls that are used in the PBR company. These bulls that they own are some of the biggest and toughest bulls, hence their name, The Built Ford Tough Series Top 10.

The first bulls name is Bushwacker and is an American bucking bull. He is a 1500 pound bull and is very active. In 2009 he was ranked 22.75 in his ranking and had a average of 2.34 seconds for buck off time.

Breaking News

We have been informed that in Colorado this summer there will be one of the biggest tournaments of the year. The dates of the tour are: Asheville, N.C (June 1-2), Huntsville, Ala. (June 16), Tupelo, Miss. (July 14),  Grand Junction, Colo. (July 19), and Ft. Myers, Fla. (July 20-21). The Professional Bull Riders will be hosting the Pro Division and will feature some of the biggest and best bull riding in the world. The tour will be hosted by PBR Stock Contractor Jeff Robinson as well as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the PBR, the series will be called The RMEF Big Bull Tour. The Tour will consist of 5 events and will contain some of the biggest names in bull riding. Anyone can compete at any of these events and can compete to win a series title. The winner will receive a signature rifle from RMEF, a 2013 hunt courtesy of RMEF, a full set of Cooper Tires and a New Holland Rustler utility vehicle.

I think that this event will be a big hit for the bull riding community. There are not many shows that are this widespread and last this long. I think this will be a big hit for them as well as a fun and exciting experience for bull riders all around. They get the chance to compete with other bull riders around the nation and the chance to win some great prizes. This should be a big hit of the summer and have a great time.

Background

Bull  Riding is one of the most popular sports of the rodeo today. It is also one of the most dangerous and many riders say "It's not if you get hurt, it's when you get hurt." This sport is one of the most exciting and exhilarating sports and the people that do it are hooked and usually enjoy it.

Although it's not the most well known sport in the world it is very popular in the south and west. Bull riding hasn't always been a professional sport, it began with just some people that thought getting on the back of a 2,000 pound bull would be a good idea. It began back in the 1700's when the ranchers out west influenced the cowboys and they began the sport with what we know it as today. They began charging people money to come watch them compete and many cowboys realized they could earn a living riding. When competitions became prominent they soon realized that it was unsafe and some cowboys actually left and never returned.

The rodeo today has changed very much and has become a big spectator sport. There are many teams throughout the country that compete in shows and rodeos all over the country. One of the biggest rodeo groups in the US today is called the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) which was founded in 1975.  The equipment has changed  over the years and consists of, a cowboy hat that serves as a helmet. Avest that is made to absorb the shock and blow from being thrown off as well as protecting the riding from being puntctured. They wear a glove on their riding hand which holds onto the bull rope which is basically the only thing keeping the rider on the bull at all times. They have spurs on their boots to help them stay balanced and stay on the bull during the ride. The story of bull riding is always changing and you can never predict what will happen.

Intro

My name is Shelby and i'm a senior at Scarborough, Maine doing a project on bull riding. All my life I have been interested in bull riding and the adventure that comes along with it. I have never actually been able to ride but I have been to many shows. When I get older I look forward to actually trying out bull riding. I hope you enjoy hearing about some info, news and my knowledge of bull riding.
